Dengue is a viral disease. There are 4 dengue virus serotypes (DENV 1, 2, 3 and 4), transmitted by the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. The virus act as different viruses: infection with one serotype does not protect against others, and sequential infection by a different serotype put people at greater risk of developing severe dengue.
